@kanatanate and I are at ENTER this week, a worship conference hosted by New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

So far, it’s been one of the best worship conferences i’ve ever been a part of. i can’t say enough about the leadership here…from Ross Parsley (worship pastor) to the Desperation Band guys, to Kevin Morehouse (tech director) & his media team. Kevin even created his own worship software that is pretty stellar (both PC & MAC!!)…it’s called SongScreen Liquid.

The other day, Nate’s iPhone conveniently fell into the pool, so he was forced to get the new iPhone 3Gs. And we’re benefitting from the new video recording capabilities and were able to capture some pretty cool VJ moments during worship while Jared Anderson led.

nate brought it with the visuals, and i was busy capturing & tweeting video (via Tweetie).

  1. What I like about Songscreen Liquid is that you can cross mix two sources in software, although it’s not perfect. In fact I can recommend a much cheaper vj software for mixing clips on the pc; however, no scriptures, announcements, child notification thing, etc. I would love to know how many others cross mix(cross fade – park it 60-40% or somewhere in between) their clips in WHAT software apps. I know Edirol does($$), most all vj apps, duh a hardware switcher, Presenter Pro? Media Shout? Others? ??? I want to TD/key/crossfade/composite my media more than just trigger it.

  2. There are no other softwares that support text and manual-blending (live VJ-style cross-dissolving) of backgrounds except for SongScreen. And it’s been doing that for years. I got to see a preview of the new SongScreen coming out and it’s pretty impressive.
The only thing about the current SongScreen is that it was designed specifically for New Life Church in CO Springs, which is a very free-style, on-the-fly style worship environment….not very scripted.
The developer is aware of it’s weaknesses/limitations, and the new and improved version should surely rock users’ worlds. He’s only one man, and he’s on full-time staff at New Life (which is a fairly large church)… so it is what it is, and it’s pretty impressive. I’d rank that program as the 2nd best VJ-friendly worship media software (for running lyrics and visuals) in existence. (ProPresenter being the first).

If you are looking for a PVP-like substitute on the Windows platform, then SongScreen is the way to go.
Now you do have other VJ softwares that can cross-blend, manipulate, effect, etc the snot out of your video clips. I use PVP (renewedvision.com) and there are a ton of others out there that VJs in concert and club environments use. but these do not support the overlaying of lyrics inside the program itself. (some have neat text features and even on-the-fly text animations but these are more for effects rather than running tons of slides of worship lyrics…make sense)?

EDIROL is, i believe, the best hardware solution….but it can get expensive (for churches usually)…but in the grand scheme of video production, their product offerings and prices are the best in town.

but again, propresenter and mediashout (and all the others, ie EasyWorship, SongShow/Sunday Plus, etc) do NOT support the manual blending of backgrounds while running lyrics. at least not this week.
